INFORMATION FOR NEW PARENTS
We realise that a move to Portland Academy is a big step and families frequently worry that their child will be unknown and feel insecure in a new, large and unfamiliar environment.
To try and reduce this worry and to help us know your child better we begin the transition process in the February before your child is due to start at Portland. Once the Statement of Special Educational needs names Portland as the secondary provision, we do everything possible to ensure that we know and are ready to meet the needs of each individual who will transfer to our school.
Following the review, families are given the opportunity to visit Portland and to have any questions answered by a member of Portland’s staff.
Many prospective pupils will already have participated in a wide variety of activities at Portland including using the swimming pool, joining in sporting events and being involved in performing arts.
Please keep your eyes on our News and Information section where we will post details of parent coffee mornings, after school clubs, and dates for other appointments in school.
We have provided a transition timetable so you know what you can expect. We hope this is helpful to new and prospective parents.
Transition Timetable
Prior to February – Parents discuss options available to their child at the primary school review meeting.
February to April – Discussions take place with the primary school and information is transferred to Portland.
Summer Term – Transition visits take place one afternoon a week. Students are brought to Portland from their primary school, to work alongside Portland staff and students.
End of June – Early July – Children are allocated to year 7 classes on the basis of the information we have received and who will work best together. Children come into school to meet their new class-mates and staff. Families are invited into school to meet the staff, ask questions and have any concerns addressed.
October – Parents evening to review the first 6 weeks at school and to help set future targets.
