Welcome to the Portland Academy website, we hope you enjoy browsing.

We cater for approximately 204 students between the ages of 11 and 19 who experience severe learning difficulties and profound, multiple and complex medical needs. A growing number of our pupils are also autistic. Portland offers co-educational day provision to pupils from a catchment area that covers the city of Sunderland and beyond.

Portland Academy is part of ‘The Ascent Academies’ Trust’, a multi-academy trust which currently consists of 4 special schools across Sunderland, Durham and Stockton. This partnership provides us with a wealth of experience and knowledge and opens up many opportunities for working together to improve outcomes for our pupils.

The school has excellent facilities, including a social café, therapy pool, sensory room, OT Room, woodland walk, outdoor adventure area and bike track. These, together with a relevant, progressive and challenging curriculum delivered and supported by committed staff, enables us to offer a wonderful range of varied opportunities to enrich our pupils’ lives.
